THE LATEST FROM THREE FARMERS

Dill Pickle Roasted Peas (082031001)

Did You Know?

Canada is the world’s largest producer of yellow and green field peas! Dry peas have the largest production volume of all special crops in Canada. There are several varieties of dry peas grown in Canada including yellow, green, maple, green marrowfat, and Austrian winter peas.

How they’re grown….

Growing peas can be very good for soil that has lost a lot of its nutrients as they are able to put nitrogen back into the soil. Peas are a legume that does not tolerate being waterlogged, developing best in deep soils and growing poorly in eroded or compacted soils.

At our farms in Southeast SK, green peas are one of the first crops we harvest each year. The growing season is approximately 90 days, which is shorter than chickpeas (approx. 110 days). They are exactly as you see in your garden but on a much larger scale and must be completely dried from the sun before harvesting; so when they’re ready for harvest, they are not all that green anymore! A good healthy yielding crop of peas will show about 7-8 peas per pod.

How they’re made….

Once they are harvested and ready for production, the peas are sent to be cleaned of any pods, rocks, dirt, weeds, and other foreign material and then make their way to our Food Grade facility in Keeler, SK. The roasting process is similar to how we roast our chickpeas or how you would roast green peas at home, but of course utilizing industrial sized roasters and equipment for larger scale production. We choose to dry roast our peas; creating air pockets that result in an airy, bold crunch.

Lastly, we package up our flavour packed Roasted Peas in Regina, SK and prepare them for distribution. The packaging machine used is able to pump out a high volume of packages per day and once they’re packed up, they are shipped off and ready for store shelves!

We take pride in providing locally grown products that taste good and are good for you. Thank you for taking the time to trace the journey of your Roasted Peas from our farms to your table.

FACT: Pulses such as green peas have an extremely low water footprint. They grow in dry land agriculture and utilize very little water compared to traditional crops such as wheat.
